It started in 1984 when famous ice cream lover1 President Ronald Reagan announced July as the National Ice Cream Month. It was certainly a good month to choose, being in the middle of summer. But even in winter, ice cream still tastes delicious. It's fitting2 that the USA has a national day to celebrate their favourite sweet. Americans eat more ice cream than anyone else in the world. It is probably the national dessert, along with apple pie. On this day, people will have fun making homemade ice cream and having ice cream parties.

Ice cream is different in many countries around the world. Italians are very proud of their gelato, while Indians believe their kulfi is the tastiest. The history of ice cream is a little unclear. Historians5 say it arrived in Europe from China hundreds of years ago. The French and Italians designed flavoured milk ices, which made their way across the Atlantic. This is when it became known as “ice cream”. The first ice cream parlor6 in America opened in New York City in 1776. It is now a $3 billion industry in the USA alone.
