　　China reacted angrily to the move, saying it “firmly opposes” the deployment8 of the system, which is designed to counter North Korea’s large arsenal9 of short-range and medium-range missiles. Washington insists the system is aimed solely10 at defending South Korea and Japan, but China views the Thaad system as a threat to its own ballistic missiles and warned that it would be forced to respond to “secure our own security interests”.
