If you are reading this article, then no doubt you have come across emoji. They have become an indispensible part of the web and can be used to express a variety of emotions, things, people, and so-on. There are several kinds of plants, animals, buildings, people in different poses— the list goes on.

But what it doesn't have is a black person or a Latino. There’s an Asian guy, an Indian man, and many Caucasians. This lack of diversity has sparked some controversy1 over the last few years. Some petitions3 have even started to circulate on the web.

Emoji were originally developed in Japan and this fact is perhaps part of the reason for their lack of diversity. Later, they were adopted by Apple and became popular around the world.

One petition2, which is posted on DoSomething.org (Here’s the link.), demands that Apple include some non-white characters, including African-Americans and Latinos to the new iPhone operating system when it is released later this fall.
