But Bunse says they have been in a similar situation in the past, and China brings more opportunities than threats.

I think Germany is an open country in investment. We should treat Chinese investors³ the same as German investors. We welcome them. Capital is flowing in both directions. And some German enterprises are working hard to win a share of the Chinese market.

Architectural firm Co-Ordination identified opportunities and took action early by opening an office in Shanghai.

Its CEO Jochen Gringmuth explains his interest and ambitions in China.

"Beyond the European market, China is very exciting and versatile⁴ for us to be engaged in design and design-based projects. In addition to the economic issues, our curiosity in China plays a big role, too. We want to explore a new market, a new country, a new culture."

Many observers believe Germany is in an ideal position to feed the Chinese market with high-end products and cutting-edge technology.

China meanwhile is regarded as being placed to provide vast investment opportunities in return.
