　　What better to counter accusations² of a conspiracy³ than a conspiracy theory? 有什么比用阴谋论为自己的间谍罪平反更好的方法呢？

　　So declared John Brennan, former director of the CIA, at a hearing of the House Intelligence Committee on May 23rd,  5月23日，前美国中情局局长John Brennan在出席美国众议院情报委员会听证会时公开声明如是说道，

　　adding that he had seen intelligence of “contacts and interactions between Russian officials and US persons involved in the Trump⁷ campaign,”  他还表示他曾看到过一份有关俄罗斯官员与特朗普竞选团队在私下接触的情报。

　　leaving him with “unresolved questions” about whether Russian spooks successfully recruited American helpers. 但他无法判断俄罗斯间谍组织是否成功地吸纳了美国人。

　　He remembered a warning telephone call he made in August 2016 to the head of Russia's spy service, the FSB, urging his opposite number to remember that,  他还记得自己在2016年8月与俄罗斯联邦安全局局长取得联系，并警告说：

　　regardless of their political affiliation⁸, “American voters would be outraged⁹ by any Russian attempt to interfere⁵ in the election.” 不管美国的选民们支持哪一个政党，如果俄罗斯企图干涉美国大选，那么必将激起民愤。

　　It is rare to hear a spy chief sound insufficiently¹⁰ cynical¹¹ about the world, but Mr Brennan managed it. 大多数的间谍组织领导人看上去都愤世嫉俗，但是布伦南是个特例。
