Chinese President Xi Jinping has met his Irish counterpart Michael Higgins in Beijing, with both pledging to boost strategic partnerships1 between the two countries.

President Xi says the Sino-Irish relationship is a strong one, highlighting cooperation in such sectors2 as information technology, medicine, life science, and agriculture.

Recalling his meeting with Xi Jinping in 2012, President Higgins also expressed his hope for the future cooperation between the two countries.

After the talks, the two presidents also witnessed the signing of deals worth 15 million U.S. dollars, involving the investment and education sectors.

Investigators3 from the US Senate have delivered a damning indictment4 of CIA interrogation practices carried out after the 9/11 attacks.

In a 500-page summary, the Senate Intelligence Committee accuses the agency of inflicting5 pain and suffering on prisoners with tactics that went well beyond legal limits.

The report found that the torture tactics used by CIA, including "waterboarding," were more brutal6 than what the agency has previously7 acknowledged.

The interrogation program was devised by a couple of CIA contractors8 to squeeze information from suspects after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

The program ran from 2002 to 2006 and involved questioning al-Qaeda and other captives in secret detention9 facilities in various countries.
