Three people have been confirmed dead after gunfire ended a 16-hour hostage siege at a Sydney cafe.

Police say the dead include the gunman and two of the 17 hostages. Four others were wounded.

The two dead hostages have been identified as a 34-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman.

Local media identified the gunman as 50-year-old Iranian-born Man Haron Monis, who was once prosecuted¹ for sending offensive letters to families of Australian troops killed in Afghanistan.

Official data shows more than 900 French nationals and residents have either joined the Syrian civil war already or had made plans to travel to the war-torn country.
