　　over ridges³ of hills covered with a ragged⁴ forest of scrub oaks, and broken by deep gullies.  穿越道道山脊，路上到处是参差不齐的矮橡树林，不时可见幽深僻静的溪谷沟壑。

　　About ten o'clock in the morning we came to where this line of rugged⁵ hills swept down into a valley, 早上大约十点的时候，我们来到高矮不一的一处丛林路口，俯瞰脚下林木直抵山下沟谷，

　　through which flowed the north fork of Red River.  那条红河北段从脚下沟底流过。

　　A beautiful meadow, about half a mile wide, enameled⁶ with yellow, autumnal flowers,  一处大约半英里宽、美丽的草原甸子缀满秋天金黄灿烂的花朵，

　　stretched for two or three miles along the foot of the hills, bordered on the opposite side by the river,  那片草原甸子沿山脚一直伸展两三英里，抵达河对岸一侧。

　　As we cast our eyes over this fresh and delightful¹⁴ valley,  当我们将目光转向这片清新宜人的山谷，

　　we beheld¹⁵ a troop of wild horses quietly grazing on a green lawn, about a mile distant, to our right,  只看见一群野马在黢绿的草地上安静地吃草。野马群位于我们右侧大约一英里开外，
