　　some of the rangers² without hats or caps, their hair flying about their ears, and others with handkerchiefs tied round their heads.  有的骑手没戴帽子，长风肆意凌乱着他们头发，还有些猎手用布条将脑后头发扎紧。

　　The buffaloes⁴, which had been calmly ruminating⁵ among the herbage, heaved up their huge forms,  一直安静吃草的野牛群觉察到不安，收拢起庞大队形，屏神凝气地聆听草地那边传来的骚动，

　　gazed for a moment at the tempest that came scouring⁶ down the meadow, then turned and took to heavy, rolling flight.  片刻工夫掉头，尥起蹄子成群跑开。杂乱蜂拥的野牛群一泄如注，

　　They were soon overtaken; the promiscuous⁷ throng⁸ were pressed together by the contracting sides of the valley,  山谷那边围猎嘈杂更加剧了牛群恐惧，它们拥挤不堪，忙不择路地夺命狂奔。

　　and away they went, pellmell, hurry-skurry, wild buffalo³, wild horse, wild huntsman,  那些野牛野马，加上游牧骑手搅成乱团，牛群马群的骚乱炸锅，

　　At length the buffaloes turned into a green brake, on the river bank,  野牛群一直跑到河岸绿草地，总算收住了蹄子，

　　while the horses dashed up a narrow defile¹¹ of the hills, with their pursuers close to their heels.  而此刻野马群正从山谷一处狭窄隘口发狂地夺路奔下，后面骑手们紧追不舍，他们离马群愈来愈近。

　　Beatte passed several of them, having fixed¹² his eye upon a fine Pawnee horse that had his ears slit¹³ and saddle marks upon his back.  比特疾驰越过好几匹野马，眼睛死死盯着一匹漂亮的北美印第安族波尼马，那马明显特征的狭长鞍形耳朵贴在脖颈后面。比特勇敢地揿着马，

　　He pressed him gallantly¹⁴, but lost him in the woods.  然而，在穿越丛林的迅速奔跑中，那马转瞬间便不知去向。

　　Among the wild horses was a fine black mare¹⁵, which in scrambling¹⁶ up the defile tripped and fell.  野马群中还有匹漂亮的黑色母马，那马趔趄着爬上隘道，却不幸绊倒在地，

　　A young ranger¹ sprang from his horse and seized her by the mane and muzzle¹⁷.  一位年轻骑手从马上猛地飞扑上去，抓住了它的鬃毛和牙口。

　　Another ranger dismounted and came to his assistance.  另一位骑手也旋即下马，助他一臂之力。
