Poor Lazarus there, chattering² his teeth against the curbstone for his pillow, and shaking off his tatters with his shiverings,  可怜的拉撒路躺在那里,头枕栏石,牙齿震颤作声,浑身颤得连他的破布片都给抖掉了,

he might plug up both ears with rags, and put a corn-cob into his mouth, and yet that would not keep out the tempestuous³ Euroclydon.  他也许可以用破布堵住两只耳朵,拿一根玉米穗轴插在嘴里,不过,那还是挡不住那阵狂暴的犹罗克利顿。

Euroclydon! says old Dives, in his red silken wrapper-pooh, pooh! What a fine frosty night; how Orion glitters; what northern lights!  犹罗克利顿呵!那个穿着紫绸袍的老财主说...他以后还要穿上一件颜色更深紫的袍子咧)呸!呸!冰天雪地的夜景多美丽;猎户星座多光辉;北极光又多明亮呀!

Let them talk of their oriental summer climes of everlasting⁴ conservatories⁵; give me the privilege of making my own summer with my own coals. 让他们去谈他们那一年四季温暖如春的东方气候吧;给我一种特权,让我用自己的炭火来创造我自己的夏天吧。

But what thinks Lazarus? Can he warm his blue hands by holding them up to the grand northern lights?  但是,拉撒路是怎样想的呢?他对着壮丽的北极光高高举起他那冻得发青的双手就会感到温暖吗?
