Tommo recalls how Molly is thrown out by her family and comes to stay at the Peaceful's cottage. One day on an errand in Hatherleigh Tommo comes across a parade of soldiers during a recruitment drive. Tommo determines to volunteer but when he talks about the soldiers he has seen to his mother and Charlie it becomes clear that Tommo is too young to join up. Charlie though is not too young and the Colonel is determined2 to make him enlist3 - and when Charlie does so Tommo aims to stay with Charlie.
