Researchers now have a better understanding of why heart muscle lacks the ability to fix itself. And according to UPI, that newfound insight may lead to more effective ways of treating heart disease. A study by Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Heart Institute revealed a previously1 unknown connection between processes that keeps the heart from repairing itself.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. That's because the heart muscle is one of the least renewable tissues in the body. Researchers used genetically2 engineered mice to study two distinct heart pathways.
