Uber launched a small fleet of self-driving cars in San Francisco on Wednesday, but the California Department of Motor Vehicles told the ride-sharing company that without a permit it was breaking the law.

In a conference call with the press on Friday, Uber's vice1 president said, "The cars are on the road today." According to Uber, the law doesn't apply to them because there are human drivers monitoring the cars which means that technically2 they aren't autonomous3 vehicles.
