U.S. shatters daily COVID-19 cases record again

President Xi: China's role in pandemic response wins global recognition

The Chinese president says the country's contribution to the global COVID-19 response has received many plaudits from other countries.

Xi Jinping made the remarks in his 2022 New Year Address.

"Only through unity¹, solidarity² and cooperation can countries around the world write a new chapter in building a community with a shared future for mankind."

China has so far provided two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine³ to over 120 countries and international organizations.

China-Russia ties "unbreakable": spokesperson

A Chinese Foreign Ministry⁴ spokesperson says the friendship between the country and Russia is unbreakable and that their bilateral⁵ cooperation has great potential.

Zhao Lijian made the remarks following Russian President Vladimir Putin's message of New Year greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping, where Putin expressed confidence that the two countries will expand bilateral ties.

"The relationship between China and Russia has been promoted to a higher level with higher quality and standard, which has not only benefited the people from both countries, but also made important contributions to safeguarding world peace and stability."

Zhao adds that the two sides will continue to share development opportunities with each other and jointly⁶ promote the Global Development Initiative to build a new type of major-country relationship.

IOC president Bach confident of safe, secure Beijing 2022

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach has expressed confidence in a successful Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

In his New Year message, the IOC chief highlighted Beijing as the first city ever to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games and acknowledged China's effort to engage 300 million people in winter sports.

Bach also reviewed the year 2021 where the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games were staged with success, engaging three billion unique viewers worldwide.

Chinese mainland reports 175 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases

The Chinese mainland on Friday reported 175 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases.

The National Health Commission says 174 of the new local cases were reported in Shaanxi.

One case was reported in Guizhou.

The latest data of Johns Hopkins University shows the United States set a new record high of over 640,000 daily COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Over the past week, nearly 2.5 million new cases and nearly 9,000 new deaths were added to the tally⁷.

World's largest trade deal enters into force

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership⁸ agreement, the world's largest trade deal so far, enters into force on Saturday.

Signed in November 2020, the RCEP groups the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

According to the agreement, the implementation⁹ of the RCEP will begin 60 days after ratification¹⁰ by at least six ASEAN and at least three non-ASEAN countries, which was achieved before Nov. 2, 2021.
