The tunnel was cold, and wet, and dark, and narrow. Poor Toad got frightened and ran into the Rat by mistake, who then nearly knocked the Mole⁴ over.

All this made a lot of noise, and the Badger, who was in front with the lantern, turned round.

' If Toad can't keep quiet, ' he whispered⁵ angrily, 'I'll leave him here alone in the dark! '

After that, the Toad kept very quiet.
