Millions of people perished in the inhumane Soviet¹ prison system known as the Gulag.  Criminals and political prisoners alike suffered merciless beatings, forced labor², and endured temperatures of 40 below zero in distant isolation³ from the rest of the world.  The Gulag disappeared with the collapse⁴ of the Soviet Union, but evidence has emerged of renewed prison brutality⁵ in today's Russia.  VOA Moscow Correspondent Peter Fedynsky has this report, which contains scenes of disturbing violence.
