196. Scarlet1斯嘉丽 scarcely-screen
There was a young theater student who was barely scraping by working as a waitress in restaurants. She had applied3 for many scholarships but was denied every time. She had great hopes of becoming a great actress playing on the big screen, but at the time she could scarcely make a living, she had to scratch and scrape for every scrap2 of food that she had. She was like a scavenger4. She also had scholarly ambitions, but her hopes were scattered6 by failure after failure. She had scoured8 the papers for auditions10 day after day and scrambled12 to go to every audition9. Eventually, she developed a scheme of finding out the schedules of talent scouts14 who were scouring15 for talented actresses, hoping to score with one of them.
She went to one of those auditions, and it was a stage production of Gone with the Wind. She was auditioning16 for the part of Scarlet. She was asked to play a summer scene in which there was scorching18 heat. Standing19 back stage, she wasn’t scared. She had studied the script and realized the scope of her role. She had prepared her parasol and fan as the script designated. The scenery was lush, as expected for summer. When the actor who played Ashley entered the stage, he was a gentleman and carried the scent20 of a scholar. The actors acted so well, especially the young woman, and the stage was so scenic21 that the talent scout13 felt he had a real scoop22 in getting this actress. Finally, the talent scout invited the young theater student to be an actress in an upcoming Hollywood movie.
