This is Scientific American sixty seconds science. I am Clara Muscovites. Got a minute?
When comes to the percentage of bachelor degrees earned by women, physics trailed biology, chemistry, earth science and math. And women made just 14% of physics college
faculty1 members in 2010. But these starting(?) stats did not dip the mood at the western coast conference for undergraduate women in physics, January 17through 19 at the University of California at Berkeley. One hundred seventy female students gather to tour physics labs, hear from
physicists2, and share their research.
“our goal ... is to give these women the opportunity to come into acts with other women in physics at many different levels, both in academia and industry”. Berkeley physicists and conference organizer Gabrielle …(?) , “and one of the ideas is to present them with information about the potential career path (?) and physics degree”.
I was once an undergraduate woman majoring in physics. I attended the conference to speak about careers and science writing. Between the attendees there, and those are the eight other
concurrent3 conferences for undergraduate women around the country. I hope future
statistics4 on women in physics would like the Berkeley weather and sunny.
