Amid an escalating1 trade war between the US and China, Beijing promptly2 retaliated3 against the US's move shortly after midnight. The Trump4 administration imposed a 25% tariff5 on 34 billion dollars of imports from China. Beijing responded with duties on an equal amount of American products.

Vice6 President Mike Pence defended federal immigration authorities charged with detaining and deporting7 migrants entering the country illegally. He accused Democrats8 of making opposition9 to US immigration and custom enforcement central to their party.

Fans of Belgium's World Cup team erupted in celebration as their team reached the semifinals for the first time in 32 years. They eliminated five-time champion Brazil on Friday. Belgium will face France in the semifinals on Tuesday in St. Petersburg.

Deep in the Perm region of Russia, hot air balloons are taking to the skies for the International Festival of Aeronautics10. The festival also includes competitive ballooning.
