From the CNN Center in Atlanta, I'm Nicole Lapin. Thanks so much for checking in with us today on this Friday. Here's a look at what's happening Now In The News.

Three NYPD detectives were all acquitted1 on charges related to the shooting death of 23-year-old soon-to-be married Sean Bell. The groom2 was killed in November of 2006. You might recall that officers fired more than fifty bullets in this incident. The NYPD has always maintained that the officers felt threatened and fired in self defense3. Bell himself was unarmed.

President Bush has been highlighting the successes of his 1.2-billion-dollar Malaria4 Initiative Program. He traveled to Africa in February to tell the administration's efforts to fight the disease. Earlier today he signed a Presidential Proclamation in honor of Malaria Awareness5 Day.

Now that bumpy6 road to the Olympics has already taken unexpected turns, and here's another one. Beijing says that it wants to talk, albeit7 indirectly8, to the Dalai Lama himself about the Summer Games. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader says that he welcomes that move. China's state-run news agency is announcing that Beijing hopes the Tibetan spiritual leader will help stop some of the protests and some of the violence going on ahead of the Olympics.

Now amid all of that controversy9 and the diplomacy10, the Olympic flame is now brightly burning in Japan. The torch will make it through the streets of Nagano later on Saturday. One of the places it won't pass is Zenkoji Temple, which had originally been selected as the relay starting point. Officials say that they ban now that torch run for security and also for religious purposes.

That's a quick look at some of the news making headlines this hour. For more on those stories and other news of the day, CNN is always your source online, on TV or on your cell phone.
