　　咖啡浆果成熟的时候, 就让工人摘下来, 或者从树上摇下来, 落到树下面铺着的布上。

　　The berries are then dried in the sun until the soft outside pulp² becomes dry and hard.

　　然后把咖啡浆果在太阳底下晒干, 直到外面柔软的果肉变得又干又硬。

　　This dry huskis removed by rolling the berries in a machine.

　　Have you ever noticed these words on the bag or tin of coffee which you have bought: "This is sold as a mixture of coffee and chicory"?

　　Chicory is a brown powder some what like coffee, but it is got from a very different plant.

　　菊苣粉, 是一种有点像咖啡粉的棕色粉末, 但却来自一种非常不同的植物。

　　The chicory plant grows in this country.

　　菊苣草是长在英国的,

　　It has a flower like that of the dandelion, and a thick root.

　　有着像蒲公英一样的花, 根非常粗。

　　The root is dried and roasted³, and is then ground into a brown powder.

　　把根晒干, 烤熟, 碾成一种棕色的粉末。

　　Chicory is much cheaper than coffee.

　　菊苣比咖啡便宜多了,

　　It makes the coffee very dark in colour, and gives it a slightly bitter⁴ taste, which many people like.

　　可以让咖啡颜色变深, 还带上点儿苦味。很多人喜欢这种苦味。

　　Be sure to add plenty of hot milk to your coffee before you drink it.

　　喝咖啡之前, 一定要往里加上足够的热牛奶。

　　The mixture of coffee and milk is a good food, and will nourish⁵ your body.

　　咖啡和牛奶的混合物, 是一种很好的饮料, 对身体有好处。

　　Do not drink strong coffee just before going to bed.

　　在睡觉之前可不要喝浓咖啡,

　　If you do, it will keep you awake for some time.

　　喝了就会有一段时间睡不着觉的。

　　Coffee has been used in our country for more than two hundred years.

　　英国人喝咖啡已经有200多年的历史了。

　　The first coffee-house was opened in London, in the year 165Coffee was then very dear, but it can now be bought for one shilling⁶ a pound.

　　最早的咖啡屋是1652年在伦敦开的。那时候咖啡还很贵, 但是现在, 一先令就可以买到一磅了。
